Welcome to the official blog of the NorCal Regional Qualifier for the 2009 CrossFit Games! The NorCal Qualifier will take place May 2-3 in Aromas, CA, at the same location where the 2009 CF Games will be taking place just a couple months later.
This is the ultimate resource for all things related to the NorCal Qualifier. On this blog, over the course of the next 6 months, you'll find information on registration, athlete profiles, workout format, rules & regulations, and just about anything else you might want to know.
Please note: Registration will not be open until mid- to late January 2009. More details to follow over the next few weeks.
Please also note: We will not be posting workout details for a very, very long time. So please, no questions about the specifics of the workout(s) at this time.
And just in case you're new to the CrossFit Games, here's what Coach Glassman had to say about the CF Games:
"In implementation, this looks like sport. This is revolutionary. It's as distinctive of the program as are the movements and the charter of functionality and variance. Our workouts are competitive events.
"The strength and value of CrossFit lies entirely within our dominance of other athletes. This is a truth divined through competition, not debate."
-- Greg Glassman, CrossFit Co-Founder & CEO

get the word out!
Can one attend a qualifier in a different region than that person lives in due to conflict with dates?
I'm pumped for this qualifier!!! Try your best to make it out even if you cannot compete, this will be an event to see. NorCal has in the past and will in the future put out some of the best Crossfitters around, I can't wait to see who comes from this qualifier!
I'll be there.
Doesn't seem fair to those of us in stronger regions.
Is it just me, or as anyone else interested in seeing the top crossfitters compete?
Why would I care if all the regions were represented,
when a regional winner from a weak region wouldn't be able to qualify in a stronger region?
Too bad.
Definitely excited to compete for a slot. Wow, 2 days for the qualifier! The qualifiers will turn into 'mini games' for many regions! We have a very strong region, so making it to the games will be an accomplishment in itself.
Let's show the world that NorCal is the best. Get the best 10 firebreathers going to the games so we can keep the top male in our region AND bring the female title back home!
Herm @ CF Los Altos, CA
Erik,
You must compete in the same region in which you live.
Mike, this all looks incredibly well organized and professional. I am very impressed, but not surprised given the '08 games organization.
Please let us know at DCF how we can help you with your NorCal qualifier (volunteers, projects, etc.).
Oh, btw, it is very unfair that we only have 10 spots to qualify for!! The Bay Area produces way more FireBreathers than the rest of the world. (gotta start the smack talkin' now)
Looking forward to this event!
hi mike,
Pumped about the games this year. Any word about the about the automatic qualifiers based on last years finish at 2008 games? Are they taking the top 10, top 30?
The top 5 men and women from the previous year's competition are exempt.
NorCal will have two men and two women who earn exemptions and automatically qualify.
Men:
Jason Khalipa (1st place 2008)
Pat Barber (4th place 2008)
Women:
Tamara Holmes (4th place 2008)
Jolie Gentry (5th place 2008)
Dear Mike-
With the 2 males and 2 females exempted from the qualifiers, does this mean that there are only 3 slots left for males and 3 slots left for females?
Love,
Nabil
Hi Tumor,
No, it means that five men and five women will be coming through via the qualifier, plus the two men and two women who are exempt.
So seven men and seven women will actually move through to the Games from NorCal.
Hey Mike,
Quick question for ya:
I'm from Santa Cruz but I currently train and go to school down in Santa Barbara. Would it be alright for me to attend the NorCal Qualifer (since it is right next to home)?
CJ,
The rule that's been laid out for us on that matter is that you have to compete in the region where you live.
It ultimately depends on your permanent address. So if Santa Cruz is still your permanent address, it's good. Otherwise, you'll need to compete in the SoCal region.
Thanks for the info Mike!
Hey everyone!
I am so excited about our qualifier. This is going to be an awesome event. I am one of several folks who will be providing content to this blog. That being said, I am looking for stories about athletes and Crossfit Affiliates. Maybe you are a solo Crossfitter who plans to compete in the qualifier. Is your affiliate a virtual unknown ready to strike at the Games? Do you have someone at your box who you think might qualify for the 2009 Crossfit Games? Whatever the story, hit me up! I'd love to drop into your gym and do some video too.

Train hard everyone!
Can you pass any information on regarding the affiliate cup team competition? Team breakdown, # of guys, # of girls? Can you have more then one team per affiliate? How much does it cost? If you are on the team do you have to buy spectator tickets for the whole event?
I just found out that my Basic SWAT school starts 3 May with a PT test. I have to beg my TL to let me take the test on Monday before training starts so I can compete. Nothing good is ever easy.
Santos,
I don't know the answer to your questions. Let me check in with others in the know and I'll post an answer as soon as I find out.
Santos,
Still checking, but in the meantime, this link may help:

I also know that you can only have one team per Affiliate.
While it's a little sad we've lost our "come one come all" ability, I think we're doing a great job of scaling up as we grow.
I agree with CraigH about Nor*Cal domination. Perhaps we should have a Nor*Cal vs. Everyone Else as our championship? I'm thinking we might use a format like American Gladiators back when Joe Theismann was hosting (sans the Wonder Women like outfits).
I'm going to be keeping my ears open on ways to help out with the qualifier event.
Mike, thanks, supper excited to attend this year for the first time!!!
When can we sign up? We are getting anxious here!
All,
Registration is very close to happening and will definitely be open by end of month.
We're shooting for this weekend, but we're waiting for a bank account to be set up.
Very soon, I assure you!
Thanks for your patience.
is there a reg cutoff for this region?
Jennifer,
At this point, there is not a registration cut-off.
That may change, so no guarantees. If a cut-off does occur, we'll do our best to give plenty of notice.
