After much behind-the-scenes debate and ultimately, some weighing in by CF HQ, we've changed the standard for the muscle-up to a familiar one to most of you: initiating the muscle-up from full lockout.
We've updated the link in the previous post on standards so that it points to the new standards video.
A couple of important notes:
- This decision had nothing to do with any discussion back and forth in the comments of the previous post.
- This, in our opinion, will not affect the final outcome in any material way. It may diminish total number of reps, but the effect will be across the board and will not result in a re-ordering of athletes vis-a-vis the previous standard.
Because of this change in standards, we're extending the deadline for you to tell us whether you're doing the workouts rx'd or scaled until Wednesday 4/29 at midnight. Remember, we need the following information from you by then or you will not be placed in a heat:
Name
Age
Gender
Workout A: Rx'd or Scaled
Workout B: Rx'd or Scaled
Name of person who made credit card payment for registration (if other than yourself)
Email us that info at norcalcfregionals@gmail.com by Wed 4/29 at midnight and you're good to go.
And because of this late-breaking development, we'll be posting info on the scoring system and tiebreakers tomorrow morning.
End of story. Let's get on with preparing for the NorCal Qualifiers!

Great decision on the Muscle Up standard. People who train with legit movement standards should be rewarded for doing so, and the full lockout standard will do just that. Also the comments yesterday said all competitors will be included on Sunday. Is that official? Would you guys post that on the blog to make it final?
I also agree with the change to full lockout for the muscle-ups. I just wish I was strong enough to do the Rx'd weight on the cleans and jerks.
I don't have strong feelings one way or the other about the lock-out at the bottom. That's the way I do muscle-ups, I think that is the best way to do them. But I do wish the decision one way or the other would have been made earlier and stuck to! We did a fair amount of prep work yesterday for this WOD based on the previously posted standards.
Agree with Sax, either is ok, and I would probably opt for the "right" way, even if it means less people can do the WOD as RX - but you can't go changing your mind mid-stream. Establish a standard, and then stick with your decision...
I agree with Justin, in that the standards for the qualifiers would be set high and that those who train with stronger standards and complete range of motion should be rewarded.

Actually it is a luxury to know at all beforehand what the competition will be.
We believe that preparation for random physical challenges—i.e., unknown and unknowable events—is at odds with fixed, predictable, and routine regimens.

Maximus, I agree whole-heartedly with your assessment forehand knowledge of the WODs. My only response is that if you are going to give advanced knowledge, at least make it accurate.
Actually, I was about to say something about getting bad info early is worse than no info at all... but that's pretty whiney and now that I think about it, it would be pretty kick ass if they changed both WODs on the day of the even to something entirely different! Being totally serious here. I can think of nothing more "CrossFit" than that!
I am kinda half expecting the Games to involve the old bait and switch on the workouts! My brothers in the military had that done to them all the time when training (get to the finish line, told to run 10 more miles). Would make sense to see something similar at the Games. Expect the unexpected! It's what we train for.
Bait and switch would be awesome! That way all the peeps that had insight to the exercises (you know who you are) would be surprised.
Either way, its an amazing effort to put this event together for so many passionate people. Hats off to the organizers, big time.
And, there will always be whiners like me who stir the pot. Don't worry, if I can speak for the other "complainers," we're not as much dissenting as we are suffering from nervous anxiety about the whole damn thing!

while these changes may be "inconvenient" the organizers have done something with this event that all other regions have failed to do. The norcal regional qualifier has met and surpassed the expectations of last years games. Last year everyone was caught off guard with the 155# clean and jerk, and what did every other region do this year, they merely tried to match that expectation using the same weight(some not even doing that). Every other region is just getting their chins to the bar, metaphorically speaking. So while you may bitch and moan about flip flop standards(which I can assure you were not done by careless preparation), be damn appreciative to the organizers of this event for raising the bar higher than any other region thought to and expecting out of its competitors more then anyone else dared to. Because of them, we will all be fitter and have the best representation come the games time.
My "fat man in a small coat" just got a little bit fatter.

question about the muscle-up standards. From looking at the starting position of jason's muscle-up, it looks like he hasn't gotten into his false-grip yet. Do we have to be in this exact position "pre-false-grip, elbows locked out" or can we start in the " false-grip, elbows locked out" position. Thanks.

What about barometric pressure?
Larry - Grip does not matter, nor does direction of grip(turned in/out) Your elbows need to be fully extended while your feet are off the ground and you are in a valid starting position. It is, however, extremely difficult if at all possible to false grip with the hands faced in and get full extension of the elbows.
